When is the orchard open for picking?
Summer (June-Aug): Tues and Thurs 8-12. Sat 8-2
Fall (Sept-Oct): everyday 9-6
Are you open in the rain?
It depends on the severity of the weather. Call the farmstand or check our announcements on the homepage for up-to-the-minute information.
What is the best way to keep up with changes at Pick-Your-Own?
Sign up for our email newsletter to find out what’s being picked each week. Daily changes and announcements are posted on our website and Facebook, or you can call the store staff at (860) 464-7305.
How does it work? Where do I start?
Upon arriving on our farm, you will be greeted by our staff who can tell you what crops we are picking, how to identify ripe fruit, and where to go in the orchard. They can also point out on our informational map where exactly in the orchard you will be headed. You will be provided with containers or bags to pick into, and are charged per pound or unit, depending on the item, upon return to the greeting and check-out area.
Do I need to bring my own containers?
We have plenty of bags, buckets and containers available to use. Our staff will get an initial weight on your empty container so that you are not charged for the weight of your bucket, but only your fruit.
How much does it cost?
This is entirely based upon how much you pick! Fruit picking is an affordable day with the family; full bags of apples weigh-in in the $25-40 range, while our standard blueberry containers are $9 and $17. If you are on a budget, we recommend setting a number of pieces of fruit to purchase (for example, each child can pick 6 apples, which would cost about $4 per child). Picking the fruit indicates intent to purchase, so please plan carefully. We cannot put the fruit back on the trees!
Can I bring my dog?
We are animal lovers too, but no pets are allowed in the orchard. We provide a food-safe environment and cannot risk contamination. So unfortunately, dogs are not permitted outside your vehicle. This would violate our GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification for health and sanitation on the farm.
Can I eat fruit while in the orchard?
Sampling a piece of fruit is an expected activity, but we ask that you refrain from eating multiple fruits per family. The orchard is our livelihood, so we do ask that you pay before you eat. This will keep prices from increasing in the future and supports local agriculture and green space.
Do you accept credit cards?
Absolutely. We accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express.
How soon before closing time do I need to arrive?
Please plan on arriving at least 25 minutes before closing time. Allow more time if you are looking to gather a large amount of fruit or a leisurely stay with friends and family.
Do you have hayrides?
Yes. We run wagon rides, at no cost, through the orchard on Saturdays and Sundays in September and October.
Can I smoke in the orchard?
Holmberg Orchards is a 100% smoke-free environment.
